There are many causes of being homeless; prominent among them are natural disasters, wars, war against terrororism, overpopulation, poverty and unemployment.

At present population of Pakistan consists of nearly 200 million souls and almost 3 million are being added every year. Pakistan ranks number 6 in the list of countries by population. UN estimates that around 20 million people are homeless.

Therefore, the problem of housing is going from bad to worse as resources cannot match with the rapidly growing population because a lot of money has to be spent on feeding such a huge population. Pakistan needs at least 1 million new homes to partially meet the housing demand. Our leaders, including those in government and opposition, should give some thought to this burning issue; if no timely action is taken it will grow out of proportions.
